Did you know that Tallahatchie County has 2 County seats? Yes they are, Charleston, and Sumner. Mississippi are the county seats.Tillatoba was a county seat for a while, but in 1837 the Board of Police found it necessary to abandon Tillatoba and seek another location. Charleston goes back much farther than 1837.The land around the Charleston area was opened for settlement in 1833. Information page 668 Hometown Mississippi, James Brieger

Lela Evans and I (Helen Staten Arnold) are volunteers and have adopted Tallahatchie County. She and I have deep roots in Tallahatchie County. Her Family settled Sumner, MS, therefore it is named for them. Her family donated the property where the town of Sumner is located. My family founded Cascilla, and Swan Lake. H. Staten/Staton ( I believe this was Harvey, the only one of them with the initial (H) settled Cascilla, and was on the board of Police when Tallahatchie County was formed. Eli Staten/Staton gave the land for the town of Swan Lake to be built. He was a planter and owned a gin. He lost his life when he fell into the Gin blades. I believe that a person roots will always be where they were born and spent most of their young lives.

Many times when our ancestors disappear from a county, they have merely moved to a neighboring county.  Sometimes they haven't moved at all but the county line moved putting them in a different county.
